New review of "Home" at Suite101.com
29 May 2006
I suppose I'm not so good at these updates, sorry it's been so long! My time playing at the Vanderbilt Medical Center has been very rich and I continue to see relationships there grow and be blessed. I also recently got to join the fellows of "Super T" again, playing for a Music Row Block Party in Nashville. Nothing like playing the funk on a harp!
Wednesday May 31 I will be a part of a "NO MO CHEMO" benefit for Jill Stebbins, the mom of my friend Darci. Jill is fighting breast cancer and the proceeds from this concert will go to help in the cost of her treatments. If you are in the Nashville area, please come to Rocketown and support the Stebbins family.
In July I will be playing at the NYC songrwriters circle with Tina Shafer. In addition to being a talented performer, Tina has written songs for artists Sheena Easton, Donna Summer, Wendy Moten, Phoebe Snow, and Celine Dion. She has run the NYC Songrwiter's circle for the past 10 years, during which time it has been home to performers such as Lisa Loeb, Gavin Degraw, The Spin Doctors, Sixpence Non the Richer, five time Grammy award winner Norah Jones, Grammy Award winner Jesse Harris, and Grammy Award nominee Vanessa Carlton. Needless to say, I am honored
and excited to get to be a part of this! For more information check out www.songwriters-circle.com
Also, for you Virginians, I will be playing a concert at Shiloh on Smith Mountain Lake, Sunday July 2, 2006 and possibly in the DC area as well.

Well, a lot of exciting things have been happening here in the harpland. In July I was able to attend the World Harp Congress in Dublin, Ireland. What an exciting thing to be a part of. I met some incredible harpists and heard a lot of wonderful music. I was encouraged by the talents and technical abilities of other harpists, and also encouraged that the directions I'm going with the harp are the correct ones for me to be moving in.
One touching time was to reconnect with Sarajane Williams, a harpist who first inspired me to do harp therapy at the World Harp Congress in 1997. I ended up weeping during the harp therapy seminar, hearing so many stories similar to mine. It was such a good reminder of why I play at the
VUMC.
This summer has also provided opportunities to collaborate creatively with many Nashville musicians whom I truly admire. I've gotten the chance to play with Steve Lee, A New Leaf, The Tyrone Smith Revue (AKA "Super T"), Matt Long, and Debbie Forrest. It has also been exciting to watch the sound of Tag develop. Tawny continues to write amazing songs and the percussion that Matthew Burgess has been adding is incredible. It is such a joy to be able to play with such a variety of musicians and to see doors for this continue to open.
The other big news is that I've finished recording an album of all original music! The release date is set for the beginning of October. The album is entitle "Home", as the songs truly have come from my heart and emotions that long for different aspects of Home. I will be doing CD release concerts in Roanoke, VA and Nashville, TN and will let you know how they can be purchased online as well.
We (Täg) are putting together a college town tour, so if you'd like your city to be added, please let us know!
Cheers,
Betty-Ashton

Well, I've joined in the myspace.com phenomenon. It's really pretty entertaining, but be careful....it's addictive! Check out www.myspace.com/bettyashtonandrews and www.myspace.com/tagmusic

This Sunday is the debut performance of "Täg", a duo that has been in the works for a while. A few years ago, I got the chance to play with a great vocalist, Tawny Cox, and her band. Tawny is a belmont graduate, originally from Miami, FL. She has a voice that delights the ear and her song-writing never ceases to amaze me. Since first playing with her, we have become dear friends and have recently begun collaborating musically. Her voice and songs really lend themselves to meshing well with the harp..I hope it will be as much fun for you to listen as we have playing together!
Opening the show I'll be playing some jazzy tunes with Mark Desierto of the Convertible Jennifers. www.conjen.com

Thanks to those of you who came to here me play with Steve Lee on the Playground. What an entertainer he is! Recording of his children's concept album has begun. I'm playing harp on a few songs and accordion on a few as well. When it's finished I can guarantee it will be enjoyed by anyone young, or just young at heart. Stay tuned!

Well, I am officially a huge fan of the group ROY G BIV. If you have the chance to hear them, take it. They have an incredibly unique sound, and it jams in a way that makes me crave home (Southwest Virginia). I got to play on the EP they are cutting and it was a blast. I look forward to playing with them in the future.

The Vanderbilt Children's Hospital is amazing. The creativity that has gone into that building blows me away. Today was my first day to be playing there since it has opened. I had forgotten how much I loved playing back in the units with patients and doctors and nurses. It was so good to see familiar faces and to be playing for children again. I'm excited that I'll get to play in all of the units of the VCH, while still playing in the main hospital as well. Harp is in full swing at Vanderbilt!

Well, my electric harp has arrived and it is more fabulous than I'd even imagined. Picture the sound of a viby electric guitar. Now multiply it by 60 (because there are that many more strings). Yeah. It rocks. And did I mention it's bright blue? Be on the lookout for shows where I'll be playing it. I've got a couple coming up quickly here in Nashville. Also, be on the lookout for the new t shirts. Shout out to Micah Kandros for the incredible designs. They should be available by July 30th. Also be on the lookout for the new Sara Hart record. I played on her song "Hillside". She's got an amazing voice and is an incredibly talented writer, she was a treat to work with.

I'm anxiously awaiting the completion of my new Lyon and Healy Electro/acoustic harp and am excited to start playing it. I'm booking dates for the fall, so feel free to email me. The first show with a full band will be July 30 at Rocketown, so if you live in Nashville come check it out!
